3-D Printed Titanium Jaw Saves Endangered Sea Turtle's Life
After a nasty collision with a boat's propeller, one sea turtle nicknamed ‘Akut-3’ lost half its jaw. But thanks to a mix of kindness and cutting-edge technology, the animal has been fitted with a brand new beak forged out of medical-grade titanium.
The Sea Turtle Research Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Dalyan, Turkey took him, feed him and got him back to health. The center took CT scans of the endangered reptile and sent them to BTech Innovation, a Turkish company who created this metal beak. Surgeons then attached the 3D-printed titanium jaw to the 100pound (45kg) turtle in a two-and-a-half-hour long surgery.
Three weeks after surgery turtle feels good and now recovering well. If the prosthesis is not cut off by the body tortoise, soon it will be released into the sea.
